Using Your Gifts…

We are all given special gifts, knowing what they are can be a tricky proposition. However if and when you find out what your gift is, you must share it.

Somewhere between 1987 an 89 I realized I had a gift for teaching. It started with assisting with martial arts classes and since has grown into teaching students with learning disabilities martial arts and how to read and write. Believe me there is no greater feeling than doing what you were meant to do. I feel like an NFL quarterback throwing the winning pass in the Super Bowl.

Today was one of those days. I was able to find a way to connect with one of those very bright kids who doesn’t learn conventionally. Finding how he learns was great but seeing him learn and the way he stood tall – That was the touchdown! Confidence that’s what he learned…

Use your gifts. Score a winning TD,

As we scurry and hurry to find the perfect gift for family and friends. Let’s not worry about what they may like or want. How about giving them what they need?

Love, one size fits all!

By the way isn’t that what the season is all about Charlie Brown?

Before the gifting starts and the inevitable returning begins… Let me go on about “Returns.”

These past few days I’ve been returning gifts – Helping my cousin with his internet connections and shopping; In return for walking me to the bus stop and teaching me about cars. Helping my mother decorate her tree and clean her kitchen; In return for making me the woman I am…

I’m sure there will be more “Returns” to all the people who have given me all sorts of special gifts – This will be a pleasure. To return love is the best gift I can give and get…

So who’s gift do you need to return?

Giving – No Reason

Tis’ the season… Yes it’s the season for giving yet the unfortunate thing is most expect something in return. We’ve been conditioned by advertisers to buy, buy and buy so we can give. The problem is we’ve perpetuated a vicious circle of “gifting” that we’ve forgotten why we’re giving – Don’t say it’s Christmas!

We need to find better reasons and better gifts. We can’t just give because we’re expected to every December 25th! What about the remaining 364 days? I suggest keeping the true meaning of the season all year round by giving – No reason. Pay it forward to a stranger, how about a valuable gift like your time to an elderly nursing home patient.

There are as many gifts as there are people… Let’s be creative and give from the heart. It doesn’t even have to be gift wrapped!

Hidden Gifts

As we get caught up in the self imposed chaos of Christmas shopping, remember to look for the hidden gifts of the day. I found such a gift this past Saturday.

Let me explain; about four months ago a woman stopped by my school during off hours.  She was soliciting for a charity event called “Light Up The Fort”.  The idea was to have local business buy a Christmas tree to decorate for a contest then have the public pay to view them. Now this all sounded fine and fun in the warmth of August, so I agreed – And so it began!

I finally realized what I volunteered to do the middle of November! Yikes there were students testing for black belt, then a graduation, a demo team to prepare! Throw in a Holiday Pro Shop sale, several charity collections and an under belt test and graduation. I was regretting my impetuous decision and whined about all the work and time!

Lucky for me I have a great staff and talented and creative students and parents (gift). We held two crafting sessions (did I mention I’m craft challenged). Then the actual day of the event was cold, damp and windy (three of the fatal four all we missed was snow). We all endured the decorating  with joy and laughter(gift). The biggest surprise was yet to be…

When we returned we found out we WON Most Imaginative Tree! (gift) Yet we won much more than $250.00  – We won the incredible feeling of doing for others, sharing time with people you enjoy being with, loving and living life (BIG GIFT)
